Marine Community-Based Natural Resource Management in the Northern Mozambique Channel
The Northern Mozambique Channel (NMC) comprises the area located between Northern Madagascar and Mozambique, Southern Tanzania, a small part of the Seychelles and the Comoros Archipelago in the center. It is one of the most important marine biodiversity spots on the planet. With more than 400 species of hard corals, it is second only to the Coral Triangle in marine biodiversity and has especially high levels of endemism.
TLLG are working with WWF to provide research support on the current status and history of marine community-based natural resource management in Madagascar and Tanzania. The work is carried out in collaboration with WWF staff and researchers from Tanzania and Madagascar.
Preliminary insights from the research have been shared and discussed at collaborative workshops hosted in Madagascar (June 2019) and Tanzania (December 2019) which convened conservation and development practitioners, government officials, community representatives, and other relevant stakeholders to collectively reflect on past experience with CBNRM, and identify an action agenda moving forward.
