Brian Jones - CBNRM specialist

Brian is a community based natural resource management (CBNRM) specialist, with 35 years of working in CBNRM and conservation in Namibia and elsewhere in Africa. Brian is a former Chief Planning Officer in Namibia’s Directorate of Environmental Affairs (DEA) in the then Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET). In the DEA he coordinated the early development of the MET’s Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) Programme, working on the communal area conservancy policy and legislation. He has an M.Phil. degree in Social Sciences. Since 1998 Brian has been consulting in the field of environment and development, with one year as a CBNRM project manager for USAID-Namibia. Brian has a wide range of experience in evaluating donor funded conservation projects, CBNRM policy development and analysis, working on the ground with local communities, conservation land-use planning and strategic planning. In the past few years, Brian has had an increasing interest involvement in Environmental and Social Safeguarding in conservation projects.

  • M.Phil. Applied Social Sciences: University of Zimbabwe, 2005.

  • BA with major subjects English and History, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa
